NASHVILLE, TN — Metro Nashville Police are trying to identify a man accused of randomly attacking two people on Broadway in downtown Nashville and leaving both victims unconscious. Investigators say the assaults happened on Oct. 12 and were reported after the men later learned they had been struck.
Police said the suspect walked past the victims and punched them without warning. The victims were a 48-year-old man and an 80-year-old man, and officers said the attacks happened quickly. Neither victim realized what had happened until days later, when surveillance video was reviewed.
Police say the attacks happened in two separate incidents
According to Metro Nashville Police, the incidents involved two separate victims on Broadway. The department said the assaults were similar in nature, with the suspect allegedly approaching each man at different times and striking them as he passed by.
Officials said both men were knocked out in the attacks. Because the assaults were so sudden, investigators said the victims did not immediately know they had been assaulted. That delay became important when police later examined surveillance footage tied to the incidents.
Authorities have not said what may have motivated the attacks. At this stage, the case appears to be centered on identifying the suspect and piecing together exactly what happened during each encounter.
Older victim suffered a brain bleed and broken ribs
The more serious injuries were reported by the 80-year-old victim. Authorities said he woke up at Vanderbilt University Medical Center after spending four days in the intensive care unit.
Police said he had a brain bleed and fractured ribs. Those injuries underscored the severity of the assault, even though the attack itself was described as brief. The condition of the 48-year-old victim was not detailed in the information released by investigators.
Metro Nashville Police have not said whether the victims knew each other or whether either man had any prior contact with the suspect before the attacks on Broadway.
Surveillance video helped uncover the assaults days later
The assaults were not immediately discovered in real time. Police said the victims only learned they had been assaulted days afterward, when officers reviewed surveillance video connected to the incidents.
That video appears to be central to the investigation. Officials have not released additional details about where the cameras were located, but the footage gave investigators enough information to begin searching for the man pictured in connection with the case.
Metro Nashville Police said there have been no similar incidents reported since the Oct. 12 assaults. For now, investigators are treating the case as an isolated pair of attacks while they continue trying to identify the suspect.
Broadway’s crowded setting adds concern for downtown visitors
Broadway is one of downtown Nashville’s busiest corridors, known for steady foot traffic and nightlife activity. Incidents like this raise concern because they happened in a public area where people expect to be safe while moving through the district.
Police have not announced any wider warning for the area, but the department’s appeal for help suggests the suspect remains at large. Authorities are relying on the public to help identify him from the image associated with the investigation.
No further information was immediately released about a possible arrest, and police have not said whether the man may be connected to any other complaints in the area.
How to contact investigators with information
Metro Nashville Police are asking anyone who recognizes the suspect to call 615-742-7463. Investigators have not released any additional identifying information beyond the image tied to the case.
For now, the department says it is focused on finding the man believed to have carried out the random assaults and determining whether there are any other witnesses who can help explain what happened on Broadway that day.
The investigation remains active, and police have not said when they expect to provide another update.
