Impaired Dayton Driver Crashes Into Trotwood Police Cruiser as Officer Is Taken to Hospital With Minor Injuries After Early Morning Collision

Damaged police cruiser at a Trotwood intersection after a crash involving an impaired driver

TROTWOOD, OH — An impaired driver crashed into a Trotwood Police cruiser early Saturday morning, sending the officer inside the vehicle to the hospital with minor injuries. The Ohio State Highway Patrol said the collision happened just after 5 a.m. at a busy intersection in Trotwood.

Investigators said the driver, 33-year-old Adrean Blane of Dayton, was headed north on Shiloh Springs Road when the crash occurred. Troopers said he did not stop for a red light and struck the marked police vehicle at the intersection with Olive Road.

Troopers say the crash happened at Shiloh Springs Road and Olive Road

The crash was reported around 5:19 a.m. at Shiloh Springs Road and Olive Road, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol. The intersection sits in Trotwood, a Montgomery County community west of Dayton.

Blane was driving a 2023 Hyundai Santa Fe when he entered the intersection, troopers said. The patrol said the police cruiser was marked and was being driven by an officer on duty at the time of the collision.

After the impact, emergency crews responded to the scene and the officer was taken to Kettering Health Dayton. Officials said the injuries were minor, and no additional details about the officer’s condition were released.

Ohio State Highway Patrol says the driver was impaired

During the investigation, troopers determined that Blane was impaired at the time of the crash. The patrol said that finding led to citations for failure to obey a traffic control device and operating a vehicle while impaired.

The case adds another example of the dangers created when a driver enters an intersection against a red light. In this incident, the police cruiser was struck directly after the driver failed to stop, according to investigators.

No further information was immediately released about whether any other vehicles were involved or whether the Hyundai sustained major damage. The patrol has not said whether additional charges are possible.

Officer taken to Kettering Health Dayton with minor injuries

The officer driving the cruiser was transported to Kettering Health Dayton shortly after the crash. Authorities described the injuries as minor, but the collision was serious enough to require medical evaluation.

Marked police vehicles are commonly used in patrol work throughout the region, and the crash happened while the officer was on duty. The patrol did not identify the officer by name.

Because the collision involved a law-enforcement vehicle, several agencies responded or assisted at the scene. Officials said the response helped clear the intersection and support the investigation shortly after daybreak.

Several agencies helped clear the scene and investigate

The Ohio State Highway Patrol said it received help from the Trotwood Police Department, the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, JJ’s Towing and Sandy’s Towing & Recovery. Those agencies assisted with traffic control, investigation work and vehicle removal.

Collisions at intersections often require coordinated response, especially when a patrol cruiser is involved. Tow operators were called in to remove the damaged vehicles from the roadway and help reopen the area to traffic.

The patrol has not announced any broader traffic impact from the crash. It also has not said whether the investigation remains open beyond the citations issued at the scene.

Red-light crashes remain a risk at busy intersections

Saturday’s crash is a reminder of how quickly an intersection violation can turn into an injury crash, even in the early morning hours when traffic may be lighter. A driver who ignores a traffic signal can still create a dangerous collision with serious consequences for everyone involved.

In this case, the impact injured a police officer and led troopers to cite the driver for impaired operation and failing to obey the signal. The Ohio State Highway Patrol has not released any further public details about the circumstances leading up to the collision.

Blane is identified by troopers as a Dayton resident, and the crash took place in Trotwood, where both local police and county officials assisted the state patrol at the scene.
