Pickup Truck Crash at Wichita Youth Soccer Complex Kills Two and Injures Ten as Police Investigate What Led to the Deadly Field Entry

Police and emergency crews respond after a pickup truck entered a youth soccer field in Wichita

WICHITA, KS — A youth soccer game in Wichita turned into a mass-casualty scene Saturday afternoon when a pickup truck entered a field at Stryker Sports Complex, killing a 6-year-old boy and a 35-year-old man and injuring 10 other people. Police said the truck had been parked near the fields before it drove onto one of them around 3:25 p.m.

Investigators said the 34-year-old woman driving the truck was later released pending toxicology testing and a mechanical examination of the vehicle. Wichita police said she remained cooperative as detectives interviewed witnesses, reviewed the scene and consulted with the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office.

Police have not filed charges as investigators review toxicology and vehicle evidence

Wichita police said no charges had been filed as of Saturday evening. The district attorney’s office said it plans an initial review later this week, leaving the next legal steps unresolved while investigators continue sorting out how the truck got onto the field and why it moved into the crowd.

Officials have not said how fast the truck was going or what allowed it to breach the complex, which is fenced off and has a concrete runway leading from the parking lot. Police also said two juveniles were still with the vehicle when officers and paramedics arrived. Authorities have not described any immediate indication that the crash was intentional.

Witnesses and bystanders rushed in before paramedics reached the complex

First responders found community members already trying to help the injured when they arrived, according to police. Aaron Moses of the Wichita Police Department called the scene a tragedy and said ordinary bystanders had begun giving medical aid before emergency crews took over.

Video from the complex captured the sound of tires screeching as people fled the area. Vanessa Trammell, who was watching her 13-year-old son’s game nearby, said she saw the truck cross a neighboring field near the sidelines and strike several people. She described the moment as pure panic and said her son’s coach ran to help victims before paramedics arrived.

Children were among the injured, with wounds ranging from bruises to severe trauma

Police said the 10 injured victims ranged in age from 5 to 68 and included five children. Their injuries varied widely, from bruises to extremely severe trauma, although authorities said none appeared to be life-threatening. An 11th person was also taken to a hospital after experiencing medical complications that were unrelated to traumatic injuries.

The dead were identified as Cole Adrian, 6, and Nicholas Schafer, 35. Police originally misidentified the boy in an initial release, reversing his first and last name before correcting the record. Authorities have not said yet how each victim was struck or whether the injuries occurred in the same area of the field.

Families described a chaotic scene as one player’s father pulled the driver from the truck

One youth player identified by CNN affiliate KWCH as Isaac said his father ran to the truck and removed the driver from the vehicle to stop any further harm. He said he was stunned by the split-second decision, adding that more people could have been hit if the truck had kept moving.

Dozens of first responders quickly filled the sports complex, while children in red uniforms gathered near emergency vehicles. Moses said police later found the driver and two juveniles still with the truck when they arrived. Witnesses were interviewed at the scene and over the phone, and investigators have asked the public for video from the sports complex.

Soccer and football events were halted as Wichita mourned the victims

Stryker Sports Complex canceled all events until further notice after the crash. The facility hosts recreational and competitive youth soccer leagues for players from under-5 age groups through high school, along with adult leagues, and it includes 11 outdoor turf fields and an indoor facility.

The Kansas State High School Activities Association also suspended flag football state championship games scheduled at an adjacent field while police continued their investigation. Wichita Mayor Lily Wu said she was heartbroken and urged people to avoid the area. President Donald Trump later offered condolences during a campaign rally in nearby Park City, saying officials wanted to get to the bottom of what happened.
