KANSAS CITY, MO — Kansas City police have identified the man killed in a Thursday night shooting downtown as 27-year-old Coby Patrick. The Kansas City, Missouri, Police Department said the investigation remains active after officers responded to reports of gunfire in the area of West 10th Street and Baltimore Avenue.
Police were called out around 7 p.m. on Oct. 15 for a shots fired report. During the search, officers found a vehicle with bullet holes and discovered a man inside who had been shot. A police spokesperson said the man was pronounced dead at the scene.
Officers found the victim after searching the downtown block
Authorities said the shooting scene unfolded in a busy part of downtown Kansas City, where officers canvassed the area after the initial call. The vehicle with visible bullet damage became a key part of the investigation, leading police to the victim inside.
KCPD has not released additional details about what led up to the shooting. Investigators also have not said how many shots were fired or whether the gunfire happened directly at the vehicle or nearby before the car was struck.
The department has treated the case as a homicide, reflecting the seriousness of the deadly shooting and the fact that the victim died from his injuries at the scene.
Coby Patrick was named as the victim in an update the next morning
In an Oct. 16 update just after 5 a.m., Kansas City police identified the victim as Coby Patrick. The department did not immediately release further biographical details about Patrick beyond his age.
That update confirmed what detectives had been working with overnight as they continued the investigation. Police have not publicly said whether Patrick had any connection to the location where he was found or whether he was targeted.
For now, the identification provides the first confirmed name in a case that remains open. Detectives are still gathering information from the area and reviewing evidence tied to the shooting.
No arrest has been announced in the homicide case
As of the latest police update, no suspect was in custody. Investigators have not described any vehicle, person of interest or possible motive connected to the killing.
The lack of an arrest leaves the case in its early stages, with police still asking the public to help fill in missing details. Homicide investigations often depend on witness accounts, surveillance video and other evidence collected soon after the shooting.
KCPD has said the case is being investigated as a homicide, and the department’s statements indicate detectives are continuing to follow leads rather than closing the matter.
