Festus Man Dies in Early Morning Motorcycle Crash on I Fifty Five Near Pevely After Losing Control of Kawasaki

Missouri State Highway Patrol vehicle near a fatal motorcycle crash scene on Interstate 55

PEVELY, MO — A 23-year-old Festus man died early Friday in a motorcycle crash on Interstate 55 south of Highway Z near Pevely, according to the Missouri State Highway Patrol.

Troopers said the man was riding a 2022 Kawasaki Ninja 400 northbound at 4:54 a.m. on Oct. 17 when he lost control, was thrown from the motorcycle and struck the ground. Joachim-Plattin EMS pronounced him dead at the scene.

The Regional Medical Examiner’s Office did not immediately identify him. The Highway Patrol said it no longer publicly identifies crash victims.

What troopers say happened on I fifty five

The crash happened before sunrise on a stretch of interstate in Jefferson County. According to the Highway Patrol, the motorcycle was traveling northbound when the rider lost control for reasons that were not immediately explained.

Once the rider was ejected, the impact with the pavement proved fatal. The motorcycle sustained extensive damage, troopers said, underscoring the severity of the wreck.

Officials have not said whether any other vehicles were involved. The details released so far point to a single-motorcycle crash in the early morning hours.

Victim’s identity not released immediately

The man’s name was not released by the Missouri State Highway Patrol, which said it no longer identifies people killed in crashes. That leaves the Regional Medical Examiner’s Office as the agency handling formal identification.

The medical examiner’s office did not immediately name the victim after the crash. For now, the only confirmed details are his age, hometown and the time and place of the wreck.

Those limited identifiers are typical in the immediate aftermath of fatal crashes, when officials often wait for family notification before releasing a name.

Helmet use noted in the patrol’s account

Troopers said the rider was reportedly wearing a helmet at the time of the crash. Even so, the collision threw him from the motorcycle and he died at the scene.

That detail is part of the Highway Patrol’s incident summary, which also states that Edwards Mortuary Service transported the body to the Regional Medical Examiner’s Office after the fatal wreck.

The patrol has not said whether speed, road conditions or mechanical issues played a role. Investigators have also not described the condition of the highway at the time.

A dangerous corridor for early morning traffic

I-55 is a major north-south route through southeast Missouri, and the crash happened in the dark early morning hours when visibility is often lower and traffic patterns can be unpredictable.

While troopers did not provide a broader safety assessment, the timing of the wreck adds context to the dangers of riding at dawn on a busy interstate. The motorcycle was headed northbound when the rider lost control south of Highway Z.

The highway patrol’s account does not describe any delays or lane closures tied to the crash, and no additional injuries were reported.

What remains under review after the fatal wreck

At this stage, the key unanswered question is why the rider lost control. The Missouri State Highway Patrol’s public summary does not point to another vehicle, a road hazard or a specific mechanical failure.

Those details may emerge later if investigators complete a fuller reconstruction of the crash. For now, the confirmed facts are limited to the time, location, motorcycle model, helmet use and fatal outcome.

The death adds another grim entry to Missouri traffic fatality records, but officials have released no broader totals in connection with this incident.
