Ten Year Old Boy Dies After Being Struck by Rideshare Vehicle in Murfreesboro While Running After Soccer Ball Near Church

Police investigate a fatal crash scene on a city roadway near a church

MURFREESBORO, TN — A 10-year-old boy was killed Friday night after being hit by a rideshare vehicle in Murfreesboro, according to police. Investigators say the child had run across Middle Tennessee Boulevard to get a soccer ball and was crossing back toward Saint Karas Coptic Orthodox Church when the crash happened.

Police said the Jeep Gladiator involved in the collision was being used as a rideshare vehicle and had just turned right onto Middle Tennessee Boulevard from Southeast Broad Street. A passenger was inside the vehicle at the time. The crash happened at about 8:52 p.m. on Oct. 30 near Silver Court, and no charges have been filed.

Police say the collision happened after a right turn onto Middle Tennessee Boulevard

Murfreesboro police identified the vehicle as a Jeep Gladiator and said it was traveling after a right turn from Southeast Broad Street. The boy was in the roadway when the impact occurred near the intersection by Silver Court.

Authorities have not released the child’s name. They also have not said how fast the vehicle was moving or whether visibility, traffic flow, or other conditions played a role in the crash.

What police have made clear is that the child was struck while returning toward the church after running out to retrieve the soccer ball. The crash took place on a busy corridor that connects several parts of the city and carries steady evening traffic.

Child was near Saint Karas Coptic Orthodox Church when he was hit

Investigators said the boy had crossed from Saint Karas Coptic Orthodox Church before heading into the street to recover the ball. He was struck as he made his way back toward the church property, according to police.

The church was part of the immediate scene described by investigators, though officials have not said whether anyone from the church witnessed the crash. No additional information was released about the child’s family or the circumstances that led to the ball entering the roadway.

The fact that the incident began with a child chasing a soccer ball has underscored how quickly an ordinary moment can turn deadly in traffic. Police have not said whether the boy was alone or whether adults were nearby at the time.

No charges have been filed as detectives continue the fatal crash review

As of the latest update, police said no charges had been filed in connection with the fatal collision. The Murfreesboro Police Department’s Fatal Accident Crash Team is handling the investigation.

That unit typically examines the roadway, vehicle movement, witness accounts, and other physical evidence to determine how a deadly crash unfolded. In this case, officers have not announced any findings beyond the basic timeline and vehicle description.

Police have also not said whether the rideshare driver remained at the scene or whether the passenger inside the Jeep provided any statement. For now, the investigation remains open and active.

A rideshare trip became part of a deadly evening on a city roadway

The fact that the Jeep was working as a rideshare vehicle adds another layer to an already tragic crash, though police have not indicated that the vehicle’s status changed the circumstances of the collision. A passenger was riding in the vehicle when the child was hit.

Rideshare drivers and passengers often travel through neighborhoods, church areas, and commercial corridors at night, when pedestrians may be harder to see. Police have not said whether the driver had been using a navigation app at the time or whether the ride had just begun or was nearing its end.

The collision happened on Middle Tennessee Boulevard, a road that can carry a mix of local traffic and through traffic. Officials have not announced any changes to traffic control or safety measures in response to the crash.

Fatal crash investigation will determine what happened in the seconds before impact

The central questions for investigators now are straightforward: how the child entered the roadway, whether the driver had enough time to react, and what conditions contributed to the deadly impact. Police have not provided a timeline beyond the moment of the crash itself.

For the boy’s family and the church community, the loss came during what should have been an ordinary Friday evening. The case remains under review by the Fatal Accident Crash Team, and authorities have not said when that review may be completed.

Police have asked the public to rely on official updates as the investigation moves forward. For now, the available facts show a child struck while crossing back toward the church, a rideshare vehicle with a passenger inside, and no charges filed so far.
