CUYAHOGA FALLS, OH — Police say a 63-year-old Akron man turned himself in after a 61-year-old woman was shot and killed Sunday morning at the Cuyahoga Falls Natatorium. The woman was rushed to a hospital after the shooting, but she died soon after from her injuries.
Investigators believe the killing was domestic-related. The suspect, Craig Alan Sipe, was later booked into the Summit County Jail on one count of aggravated murder.
Authorities have said the shooting happened around 9:30 a.m., and the man fled the area before later surrendering to police. He is scheduled to be arraigned Monday.
Police say the shooting happened around 9:30 a.m. at the Cuyahoga Falls Natatorium
According to police, officers were dispatched to the Natatorium after reports that a woman had been shot. The facility is a public recreation site in Cuyahoga Falls, and the shooting drew an immediate response from law enforcement.
Officials have not publicly described what led up to the gunfire. They have, however, identified the case as one they believe stemmed from a domestic situation, which can shape how detectives build the investigation and what evidence they seek.
The victim was 61 years old. Police have not released her name in the information made public so far.
The suspect fled before later surrendering at the police department
Investigators say the man left the area after the shooting, prompting a search and continued police attention around the scene. Later, police said, he came to the Cuyahoga Falls Police Department and turned himself in.
After surrendering, Sipe was booked into the Summit County Jail. The charge filed against him is aggravated murder, one of the most serious homicide charges under Ohio law.
His age and hometown were both identified by police as 63 and Akron, respectively. No additional details about any relationship between Sipe and the victim have been released.
Hospital treatment ended with the woman's death shortly after the shooting
First responders took the wounded woman to a hospital after the shooting at the gym. Despite that emergency care, she died shortly afterward, police said.
That sequence left investigators with a homicide case rather than a nonfatal assault. In incidents like this, detectives typically review witness accounts, security footage if available, and any physical evidence left at the scene.
Police have not said whether any other people were inside the facility at the time, or whether the Natatorium remained closed after the shooting.
Domestic-related cases often focus on relationships, timing, and prior contact
Authorities have said they believe the attack was domestic-related, which suggests the investigation may center on the connection between the suspect and victim. Police have not described that relationship publicly.
In cases involving a suspected domestic motive, investigators often work to determine whether there were previous disputes, protective orders, or other warning signs. None of those details have been disclosed in this case so far.
For now, the confirmed facts are limited to the shooting itself, the victim’s death, the suspect’s surrender, and the single aggravated murder count filed in Summit County.
What comes next in the Summit County case
Sipe is expected to appear in court Monday for arraignment, when the formal charge will be read and the next stage of the case will be set. At that point, a judge could address representation, bond, and future hearings.
The investigation remains active as police continue to piece together what happened inside or near the gym Sunday morning. No further public update has been provided on the condition of the scene or on whether additional charges could be filed.
As the case moves forward, the fatal shooting at a busy public facility is likely to remain under close review by local authorities and court officials.
